Dean Beutel
Director of Technical Resources
Caterpillar

Dean Beutel is the Director of the Technical Resources division of Caterpillar’s Tractor manufacturing facility.  His organization supports the infrastructure needs for five factories in three states - with approximately 400,000 sq. meters of manufacturing space under roof.

Dean joined Caterpillar in 1978 as a sweeper, and just celebrated his 29th service anniversary.  He obtained his certification as a journeyman machinist in 1984, as well as his Bachelor’s degree from Bradley University in Production Operations the same year.  He was certified as a Quality Engineer by the ASQ in 1987, and maintains this accreditation.

He has held various positions within the manufacturing and precision engineering areas since 1984, working in Tractors, Hydraulics, Transmissions, and Fuel Systems during this time.  He moved from the Operations environment into an R&D role in 1990, and in late 2003 returned to the Tractor Operations group with his primary focus being a major modernization of the Tractor manufacturing facility.

Dr. Kenneth RussellDr. Kenneth C. Russell
Professor Emeritus of Metallurgy and Nuclear Engineering
Department of Materials Science and Engineering
MIT

Dr. Russell is Professor Emeritus of Metallurgy and Nuclear Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. His research interests are focused on theoretical and experimental studies of kinetic processes in alloys. Current topics of interest include (1) Nucleation during bulk or surface irradiation, (2) Self organizing systems, (3) Solidification of controlled porosity solids, (4) Phase transformations in solids.

He specializes in physical metallurgy, forensic metallurgy, and failure analysis. He frequently consults on legal cases involving catastrophic failure of mechanical systems, and often utilizes precision measurement systems and non-destructive testing in his forensic analysis for clients. He has a regular column called "Calamities" in the engineering magazine Design News, which chronicles some of his more intriguing cases.

In his Keynote, Dr. Russell will reflect on some his notable cases and his experiences in applying various metallurgical, failure analysis, and measurement techniques and NDT technologies for the benefit of his clients. With his bubbly and insightful style, he will also highlight some thoughts on "ambulance chasing", especially with all of the news accounts about product recalls, and how product manufacturers and measurement system manufacturers and NDT system manufacturers can better serve their Customers, while keeping the ambulance chasers away.

Additional information about Dr. Russell can be found at the MIT Faculty information web site, http://dmse.mit.edu/faculty/faculty/kenruss/
